We’re GROWING! 5 Ways To Support The Teal Cat Project

It’s a whole new year for the Teal Cat Project and we have big plans for 2012! Of course we’re going to keep partnering with TNR organizations across the country for Teal Cat campaigns. And we’ve also got a few more tricks up our sleeves, some that go beyond teal and even a few things that go beyond cats. It’s going to be exciting times so stay connected!

Reflecting back on the Teal Cat Project’s beginnings, I had no idea what I was in for. After spray painting a couple of cats I naively thought, “Oh no sweat, this will be easy!” But when the orders started rolling in and I needed to paint hundreds of cats, the panic set in. I’d look at the order list and back to my little table of ceramic kitties and wonder if I should just end it and refund the money because there was just no way.

But obviously there was a way, and we’re still going strong. After three successful campaigns and over $10,000 raised, The Teal Cat Project is definitely here to stay. In fact, this year we would like to register as a non-profit so that we can be even more effective.

But as anyone who has ever watched a caricature of a rich person on an 80s sitcom should know, you gotta’ spend money to make money! And since we’re making money for such a great cause, we think it’s worth it. Because we are now renting space, taking on an employee, and registering as a non-profit, we need to raise cash to cover these costs while still being able to donate thousands of dollars to kitty rescue groups.

So how can you support the Teal Cat Project? We’ve come up with some pretty creative and hopefully unobtrusive ways to help. There’s something for everyone here, so please do what you can!

1) Buy a T-shirt in our store! They’re cute and comfy.

2) If you use Amazon, use this referral link to purchase stuff. We use the Amazon credit to purchase much needed supplies, like fabric scissors and shipping materials.

3) Send us cats. If you can’t afford to ship them, we may be able to arrange to pay for shipping.

4) Help spread the word! Link to us on Twitter and Facebook. If you have a blog, write about us. This one is really important. If our web traffic gets better, then we can get more advertizing. Plus, the more publicity we get, the more money we can raise. We’re also looking for one big media hit to put us over the top, so if you have connections to the Ellen Show or an in at Boing Boing, hook us up! If you’d like a banner for your site, you can find them here.

5) Buy an ad! Ads are $100 a month with a 3 month minimum. One ad almost pays our rent for a month.

Thank you all so much for your support! It means the world to us. We can not WAIT to share our next steps with you. MWAH!

Litter Number Three Is Here: Valentine’s Edition!

Teal Cats

UPDATE: We are sold out, thanks for your support! New campaign to come in March!

The new litter is here, and they’re all decked out for Valentine’s day! This time, the kitties are wearing a silver heart on their tags, so they will make an extra special gift or just be even more adorable on your own bookshelf.

And speaking of hearts, for campaign number three we’ve left ours in San Francisco. The money we raise is going to the SFSPCA Community Cats Program. An amazing organization that does so much for the Bay Area even though they get zero government funding. They are a truly inspiring group of people (and kitties) and we couldn’t be happier about supporting them. Please read more about the campaign here.

You can choose what size you’d kitty you’d like, the choices are Trinket $25 (around 2 inches), Mantle $32 (3 to 7 inches) or Centerpiece $40 (8 to 12 inches.) Read more about Teal Cats here. We do combine shipping so don’t hold back on ordering more than one. Throw in a T-shirt, too! Shipping may take a few weeks but the kitties will definitely arrive before Valentine’s Day.

All Teal Cats come with a little card (think of it as an adoption certificate) that explains the Teal Cat Project mission, so if these are gifts your recipient will not be left in the dark. We’d be happy to write a short, personalized note if you ask for it in the comments when you purchase your Teal Cat.

Cats sell out FAST so hurry up and get yours. Thank mew for the support and happy Valentine’s Day, beautiful people!

SFSPCA Community Cats

We are so impressed with all the work that the SFSPCA does for feral cats, and so pleased to be supporting them through Teal Cat Project!

Since 1993, the San Francisco SPCA’s Community Cats Program has teamed up with dedicated volunteers to control, monitor, feed and provide veterinary care to feral and free roaming cats in San Francisco. Three days a week, caretakers, trappers and feeders bring in community cats for spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, flea treatment, and general veterinary examination – all at no cost to the caregivers. Their program is supported entirely by donations – the SF SPCA receives no government funding.

In 2011, the program spayed and neutered a record 1400 community cats. 300 of those cats were unsocialized adult strays, unable to be placed for adoption at the City of San Francisco Animal Care & Control shelter, transferred to the SF SPCA Community Cats Program to be neutered and returned to their managed colony. Without this life saving transfer program, feral cats in the city shelter would be euthanized.

The program goes beyond just spay and neuter, making support of the caretakers priority. Volunteers respond to requests from city residents, train new trappers, provide transport and recovery, and feed over hundreds of colonies throughout the city on a daily basis. The program provides Community Cats workshops throughout San Francisco, and operates a trap rental program. Through their efforts, the SF SPCA aims to end abandonment of cats in the city’s already over crowded shelters.

Check out this great video shot by one of their volunteers during a big trapping project conducted over National Feral Cat Day weekend in 2010!

How Cats And (My New Obsession) Pinterest Meet

I’m a bit of a social-media nerd — it’s my job, in fact. That’s why I tend to be an early adopter for new networks, and I manage profiles on several at a time. My latest social-media obsession is Pinterest, a fast-growing site that’s based on sharing images. It’s a great way to discover on the web — just pick a topic and go! Read More
